Balbin's Diva Montis Sancti and its Period Translations

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

Diva Montis Sancti (1665) is one of the most important Balbin's works about Marian pilgrimage places. Besides a historical context survey and comparison with other treatises of this genre, the lecture focuses on the comparison of the Latin text with the Czech translation by M.

V. Stejer (Přepodivná Matka Svatohorská, 1666) and reminds the German variety of the treatise (Heiliger Berg, 1668).

A formal, content and linguistic analysis will prove that the translations may be referred to as paraphrases addressed to less educated readers, accenting a religious and educational function, unlike that of the original, more historic and patriotic.
