Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

The present book is the first volume in the series of publications Theatrum Neolatinum: Latinské divadlo v českých zemích (Latin Theatre in the Bohemian Lands). It focuses on the preserved texts and synopses of Jesuit school plays pertaining to St.

John of Nepomuk. The publication opens with three studies focusing on the Jesuit schools and theatre in general, which reflect the Nepomucene cult and its forms at the time the presented plays were created.

These also summarize information about the edited textual corpus, placing it within the context of other theatrical manifestations of Nepomucene reverence. The core of this book is the edition of six manuscripts of plays and fourteen printed synopses, complete with critical apparatus and mirror translation in prose.

Each of the edited texts is equipped with an introduction, which summarizes the information about the genesis and preservation of the text and comments on its contents, style and language. The edition is completed by profiles of the authors.
