Abstract

This monograph was written on the occasion of the five hundred year anniversary of the birth of Andreas Vesalius. The first part summarizes the development of anatomical knowledge from the ancient times until the time of Vesalius and his followers.

The second part documents the reception of Vesalius' anatomy in the Bohemian lands. The third and fourth parts are devoted to the study of anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine in Prague in the period between the eighteenth and twentieth century.

The last part of the book presents contemporary anatomy at faculties of Medicine in the Czech Republic. This monograph is a result of the cooperation of thirty-nine morphologists predominantly from the medical faculties in the Czech Republic with the staff from the Institute for History of Medicine and Foreign Languages at the First Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University in Prague.
