The European Union and the United States - similarities and differences in the development of mortality

Abstract

Life expectancy at birth is in the EU-27 and in the U.S. up to 1990 more or less continuously growing. While since 1990 in the EU-27 life expectancy continues to increase, the U.S. is seen stagnation, which is more marked for women.

From a regional perspective have the values below average countries of Eastern Europe and Southeast of U.S., which is related to the historical development, respectively to higher proportion of black population in those states. Reasons worse mortality conditions in the U.S. are several, such as: obesity, smoking, poverty, etc.

Also the infant mortality rate is lower in the EU-27. In 2010 was the 4.0 %o, while in the USA was 6.2 %o.
