Sexual dysfunction in patients with diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Sexual dysfunctions are common complications of diabetes. Erectile dysfunction is the most frequent, usually organic, complication of diabetes.

Estimates of the prevalance of erectile dysfunction with diabetes range from 35-75%. Erectile dysfunction is highly prevalent in DM 2, and is associated with the entothelial dysfunction and/or with atherosclerosis and silent myocardial ischemia.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome are characterized by insulin resistance and often associated with the male hypogonadism. Diabetes mellitus has an influence on male reproductive function by means of impotence, terograde ejaculation and hypogonadism.
