Transformation of Post-socialist Metropolises

Abstract

In post-socialist cities urban environments formed under socialist regimes are being adapted to new conditions shaped by the transition to capitalist society. The establishment of market principles of resource allocation stimulated changing social practices and the development of social transformations such as internationalization, economic restructuring and social differentiation, which in turn affected spatial urban reorganizations, namely the commercialization of city centers, the revitalization of inner city areas, and the suburbanization in urban hinterlands.

Urban transformation can lead to the formation of new path dependencies. The anticipation of future development paths and prevention of problem processes is thus the key task for geographers.
