If we want to test the language level of our students we have to test all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Each of the skills requires its specific type of testing (a structured exercise) that best fits the given skill.
Reading, by its nature, uses most commonly the open-ended questions based upon a relatively long text. It checks reading comprehension - which means understanding the text within all its aspects.
