Comprehensive care for HIV-positive patient starts after confirming seroconversion (ELISA, WB) and continues with medical procedures, retention, induction of high degree of adherence, initiation of the treatment of HIV infection and/or opportunistic infections. Lifelong treatment of HIV infection with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in case of good adherence and tolerance of drugs allows adequate control over the replication of HIV and the disease is then considered to be a chronic, treatable but incurable.
In the article are presented various international and national recommendations for the initiation and management of cART, the results of recent studies and an overview of currently used medications to treat the HIV infection.
