A number of factors increases risk of peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis, e.g. diabetes mellitus, hypalbuminaemia, nasal carriege of Staphyloccocus aureus, low socioeconomic status, age. Until now it is not completely clear if the use of automated peritoneal dialysis (cycler assisted peritoneal dialysis) increases or decreases the risk of peritonitis.
In the presented study in 2761 CAPD and 4198 APD patients there was not found a significant difference between the risk of peritonitis after adjustment to age and diabetes status.
