Abstract
This paper deals with the Portuguese attempt to colonizate Sri Lanka in 1580-1630. It tries, firstly, to analyse the origin of the project of colonization, which was a product of transformation of character of Portuguese activities on the island in the 16th and 17th centuries from trade to conquest, and secondly, to find the causes of final failure of that project and to evaluate them.
