Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2014

Abstract

The questionnaire inquiry on musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) related to dental profession was performed among dentists in the Czech Republic. The questionnaires were completed by 581 respondents.

The occurrence of difficulties associated with the motoric system was reported by 96.9% of dentists and two thirds of them complained of difficulties of a moderate or major nature. Back and neck pain belonged to the most common complaints.

According to our data, the statistically significant correlation was demonstrated for: age, sex, duration of dental practice, history of musculoskeletal disease, seeing more than 20 patients a day, perceiving dental profession to be psychologically demanding and subjective assessment of general health. On the other hand, regular participation in sport activities, sitting position, supine position of a patient and the four handed dentistry can be seen as protective.

Due to the high prevalence of MSDs among Czech dentists these issues must continue to be addressed especially in question of appropriate preventive interventions.
