Exodus without Moses : Roma Emigration as a Political Phenomenon

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

This study examines nature and circumstances of Roma emigration from the Czech Republic by means of political philosophy. Conceptions of Marx, Arendt, Deleuze and Guattari are used here as analytical tools; with their help it is possible to show the temporal structure of mass emigration as well as the relation between the state and its exteriority that is being uncovered in this context.

A key to an understanding of the political meaning of Roma emigration is finally a tension between the social visibility and the tactics of social invisibility, which a social minority uses in order to escape from the gaze of a majority.
