Art and Kitsch

Abstract

The book offers a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the phenomena of kitsch from the perspective of the analytic philosophy of art. It suggests a definition of the concept 'kitsch' (by stating three necessary conditions that are jointly considered sufficient) and it examines it relationship to art.

I argue that kitsch is not continuous with art as it differs essentially from mediocre and bad art and that it forms its own sui generis category which is a negation of art. I also point of the unsatisfactory nature of current theories of aesthetic evaluation and offer an alternative approach.

In the last section of the book titled Post scriptum (pp. 161-231) I consider suggestions and reply to criticism which appeared in the English as well as domestic reviews and consider further the ethical, political, sociological and ideological aspects of kitsch.
