Breast cancer screening in the Czech Republic

Abstract

The Czech Breast Cancer Screening Programme was launched in September 2002 by establishing a network of accredited screening centres (currently 69 centres). Breast cancer screening underwent succesful transformation from opportunic to an organised programme.

Breast cancer incidence is steadily increasing, however with a growing proportion of early stages. The mortality rate is significantly decreasing due to screening and better treatment.

The coverage in the age group 45-69 reached 56,6% in 2013 and the attendance is slowly rising - we expect this year more then 60%. About 73% of detected cancers are relative small with a good prognosis (CIS or T1).
