The essey is dealing with the analysis of two different forms of cognition, the difference between explaining (Erklaeren) and of abstract principles in the exact sciences and understanding (Verstehen) of social, historical and psychical phaenomena in the human sciences. The author also notes the connection between the experience and cognition and the posssibilities of their use in the development of the cognitive process, not only concerning pupils and students but also the teachers.

The understanding of the upringing and educational activity is represented primarily as a self-understanding taking place in the reflexion of the naturof owm activity of a theacher and educator.
