The term malnutrition summarizes broad spectrum of nutritional disorders. In its broadest sense it covers even overnutrition, which includes nutritionally based obesity and metabolic syndrome.
In a stricter sense malnutrition is perceived as nutritional disorder associated with a wide deficiency of nutritional substrates serving as sources of energy (carbohydrates and fats) and protein deficiency causing lack of energy and metabolic substrates for growth, regeneration and regulation of tissues and organs.
