Recent Advances in Taxonomy of Dermatophytes and Recommendations fo Using names of Clinically Important Species

Abstract

Taxonomy of dermatophytes has changed significantly in the past decades especially due to introduction of molecular genetic methods. This paper introduces the advances in taxonomy of dermatophytes and helps to unify the species naming used in the Czech laboratories.

The concept of dermatophytes is disscused, including termination of a dual nomenclature of fungi and choosing the one correct name for each species. Imperfect stages (Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton) are generally preferred.
