Abstract

Presentation for teaching elective course "Fundamentals of Biological Psychiatry" (B01363) recommended for students of 4th and 5th year of study program "General Medicine" 1st Faculty of Medicine. Summarizes the information about the intercellular and intracellular signal transduction in the brain, focusing on signaling pathways affected by mental disorders and psychiatric drugs.

The following topics related to neuroplasticitě, neurotoxicity, stress, effects of psychoactive substances (mainly antidepressants and antipsychotics, as well as others). They include basic biological hypothesis formation and treatment of mood disorders and schizophrenia.

Finally, students are introduced to selected experimental methods of biological psychiatry and research capabilities in the field of molecular psychiatry at the Psychiatric Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine. The presentation includes the ability to test knowledge.
