Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

The article informs about historical and folklore origins of a legend published in Hormayr's and Mednyansky's almanac (1827) and later in a shorter and revised version by Karel Kalláb (1937). It is divided into 5 parts: the origin of the legend, historical background of the story, variants of the tagheirm ritual and its role in Scottish culture, the phenomenon of cat in legends and magical practices in the European context and the projection of folklore sujets into Hormayr's story.

The article contains translation of the original Hormayr's text, written in medieval German (Mittelhochdeutsch) to Czech.
