Abstract
In this article entitled The Book in the Countryside on the Eve of Munich, author describes the literary awareness building efforts in the rural society in 1930s. The interest focuses on the Osvěta venkova and Brazda journals.
Literature was reflected as the source of nationality, health and tradition in these journals, with Antonín Matula being the was main proponent of these principles. He coined the term "ruralism" (a style inspired by the countryside).
The awareness building efforts fought against low-quality literature in rural public libraries. Ruralism was supposed to be the counterweight for pornography and pulp.
In view of this fact, Matula and other writers suggested a number of censorship interventions.
