Abstract
This book (Dějiny tetování) surveys the history of the tattoo not only in Europe but the entire world including Americas, Asia or Oceania and from Antiquity to the present, "postmodern" day. Throughout history, people have tattooed their skin to beautify, empower, heal, punish, mark or even carry the body into the afterlife.
Tattoos have anchored indigenous values on the skin by creating a living canvases rooted in traditional practice. Presented study (based on scholarly sources) concerns tattooing as the main topic: its history, functions, meanings, local techniques and general human attitudes towards decorating / mutilating the body.
This book offers comprehensive overview and insight into a rich and fascinating history, which is yet to be discovered. With many historical illustrations and extensive biblioghraphy.
