Abstract
Although the term purgatory appears only in the theology of 12th century, the reality itself is mentioned much earlier. The paper briefly sketches the history of evolvement of this term, to focus later on three texts on purifying fire at the gates of paradise in Ambrose of Milan.
These text represent a relatively developed form of theology of the purgatory already at the end of the 4th century. These texts are contextualised and their Czech translation is provided.
