Prevention of joint replacement complications using a special surface finishing of the implant

Abstract

The surface modification of the implant is performed for various reasons. Mainly for improving the osteointegration of the prosthesis but recently also for the prevention of infection.

The surface can be active or passive. For prevention of infection are used primarily antibiotics, antiseptics, growth factors and more recently a silver ions.

The idea to use antibacterial silver is very old, already from the period 4000 BC in water tanks in Egypt. Silver ions appears to be an extremely useful, since they do not lead to the development of resistant strains.

Silver well prevents adhesion of bacteria, has a broad antibacterial spectrum and a long lasting effect. On the other hand, the released silver nanoparticles are cytotoxic and can be forwarded to the local and general signs of argyria.

The importance of active surface silver oxide-releasing seen especially when dealing with recurring infection or loosening of joint replacements that are becoming more common.
