Abstract

The court book with market records (Libri judiciorum or Libri contractum), which was kept from 1351 until 1367, captures in a relatively short time period of 16 years the dynamic transformations of urban society. From an analysis of the market records, it arises that members of the urban elites gradually left the town after the middle of the 14th century and their places were assumed by wealthy craftsmen or traders.

Like in other medieval towns, the luxurious urban quarters in the Old Town of Prague were in the central urban places on the Old Town Square and in the adjacent areas (Malé náměstí /Small Square/, Týn, Celetná Street), at Gallus Marketplace and also in today's streets Melantrichova and Železná. If the literature so far generally assumed the long-term holding of property by patrician families, it is necessary to reject this opinion.

According to the data of the court book, precisely the properties on the important Old Town squares were a frequent object of the market.
