Malignant mesenchymal tumours: Histopathologic classification of sarcomas of the soft tissue

Abstract

The classification of soft tissue sarcomas is based on the results of the histopathological examination of the tumour samples together with their immunohistochemical and molecular analysis. The today classification of soft tissue sarcomas used is identical to WHO International Classification of Soft Ttissue tumours (2013).

Bioptic histopathological examination is necessary to determine the specific histological type and subtype of sarcoma, to establish malignancy and assess histological grade of the neoplasm. The accuracy of histological classification has basic importace for prognostication and therapy of neoplastic diseases of this group of neoplasms.

The basic histological characteristics of different types of sarcomas are presented.
