Abstract

This text is a review of the book Birth of an Artist from the Lemonade Foam. Gender Contexts of Czech Modern Art Theory and Criticism.

In this book Martina Pachmanová focuses on writing about gender in/of art and its critical reflection in the context of Czech modern art. Gender is viewed as one of the key factors of Modern art criticism but also of the whole Modern movement, which on the one hand, emphasized the need of female emancipation, but also brought expressions of extreme misogyny.

Through the analysis of texts, the author demonstrates how the writing about gender aspects of art reflected the complex web of social phenomena, discourses, and ideologies while creating context from which (or despite of which) Czech women artist were born.
