The present study deals with the musical patronage of Count Johann Hubert Hartig (1671-1741) and in part also with his personal ties to representatives of the Order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star in Prague. The diaries of the order for the years 1735 through 1742 represent the primary source of information.
These depict everyday life both within and outside of the order itself. A systematic survey of these and other sources from the collection of the order's documents in the holdings of the 1st Department of the National Archives in Prague show that during the first half of the 18th century, Jan Hubert Hartig was one of the most important supporters of the order's musical activities, and thanks to his initiative, performances were given there of a considerable number of compositions on various occasions.
