The review is based on the analysis of approaches to designing and implementing teacher standards abroad (Slovakia; Federal Republic of Germany; England; Wales; Northern Ireland; Scotland; U.S.A.) and in the Czech Republic. Authors compare the approaches in order to identify both the promising and the problematic aspects and characteristics of teacher standards (and career systems), and subject them to discussion in broader contexts.
Responses to four essential questions are provided in the study: (1) What conceptions of teacher standards are deployed in the selected countries? (2) What functions are teacher standards in various countries
