Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors - the basics of diagnosis and treatment

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms constitute a group of tumours with different primary localization, but especially we find them in gastrointestinal tract. Apart from the common methods we use special tissue and circulating markers and octreoscan (somatostatin receptor scintigraphy) in their diagnostics.

Localized disease is very well solvable by the surgical treatment without any adjuvant therapy. In approximately 10% of advanced diseases with liver metastatic involment we can see carcinoid syndrome, that may give rise to the heart valvular defect.

Our aim in developed difficulties is to affect endocrine problems. The basic medical treatment are somatostatin analogues and other modern medicaments of tailored molecular therapy, alternatively additional treatment modalities in terms of the recommended guidelines.
