Abstract

Typography, the rational organization of graphic language, has been a rather neglected area of metalexicographic research so far. In this talk I consider the repertoire of typographic effects as a means of optimizing the support of the acquisition of word formation in the emerging Large Academic Dictionary German-Czech, an output of a project pursued at the Institute for Germanic Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy & Arts, Charles University in Prague.

I posit that the primacy of the user aspect is the key point here. In addition, I argue that especially authors of electronic dictionaries should be braver in implementing innovative solutions to the problem of representation of word formation in bilingual dictionaries.
