Approaches to Ethics I

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The aim of this book is to outline six different approaches to ethics in Ancient Greek and Latin medieval philosophy. The first chapter ("Happiness of Mortal Beings") deals with Aristotle's ethics, the second ("Eudaimonia of Parts of the Cosmos") with the ethical dimension of Stoicism.

The third chapter ("Pleasure, Death, and Friendship") discusses the fundamental characteristics of Epicurean ethics, the fourth ("Happiness can only be achieved incidentally") the possibility of ethical interpretation of Pyrrhonian skepticism. The fifth chapter ("Love and Do What You Like") dwells upon the ethically relevant themes in the writings of Augustine of Hippo.

Finally, the last chapter outlines some basic constituents of the philosophical ethics of Thomas Aquinas and debates the place of philosophical ethics in his theology.
