The chapter deals with the analysis of five chosen textbooks of French published in last forty years and their relation to the methodology they follow and whose basic characteristics are understood like "canon" by the authors. The aim of the essay is to investigate and discover rules in their structure and content and to compare them with characteristic elements, didactic procedures and pedagogical principals of methodological ways (namely audio-visual, communicative and active approach method), which they belong to.
The authors try to uncover not only the basic structures of a didactic text - textbook, "canon", which is observed by its creators, but also to find out how and why some titles define themselves regarding the canonized conception of a textbook. The issue of canon has didactic and pedagogic character.
