Abstract
The introductionary chapter summarizes recent "turns" in geography and other social sciences and humanities. Culture became ephasised as an important and independent category of inquiry in the social sciences (cultural turn).
Social research have shifted its focus closer to human beings and their ways of life. Beside rationality of human behavior and large-scale systems and structures the attention is paid to actors, values, (sub)cultures and particular contexts (spatial turn).
