Abstract

Angiogenesis in the process of formation new vessels involved in many physiological and pathological conditions. It has been increasilngly discussed topic even in oncogynaecology since its discovery in the 70s.

Vascular endothelial growth factor belonges to the group of pro-angiogenic factors and has essential importance in the neovascularization. VEGF stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and migration, increases its survival ability and permability of the vascular wall and supports tumor growth through specific VEGF receptor family.

The results of treatment of patients with advanced stage ovarian cancer can be described as unsatisfactory. The informations about atiangiogenic therapy penetrates between professionals and patients in clinical practice.

The effect of radiotherapy, inflammation, nutrition, surgical approach, pharmaceuticals, traditional Chinese medicine and hormone-dependent tumor growth etc.is monitored by levels of VEGF. The level of VEGF increases with the size of the tumor progression and worse prognosis of the disease, it is compared with other prognostic factors of ovarian cancer, benign ovarian disease and healthy controls.

Review contains collated facts of angiogenesis with an emphasis on VEGF from hisotory to the present in ralation to ovarian cancer. The aim is to create a comprehensive summary of angiogenesis and developmnet in this research.
