Depression and treatment with beta-interferon in multiple sclerosis

Abstract

Depression in patients with multiple sclerosis is a serious as well as the most frequent neuropsychiatric syndrome. Early diagnosis and adequate management can significantly improve the quality of life in a patient with multiple sclerosis.

In the past, an increased occurrence of depression in patients receiving interferon beta as part of treatment for demyelinating disease was often reported. This article presents a summary of the latest knowledge concerning the occurrence of depression in patients treated with interferon beta and provides a more detailed isnsight into the risks.
