Olga Taussky-Todd and questions about Geršgorin circles

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
2012

Abstract

The union of Geršgorin circles is a region in the complex plane which contains all the eigenvalues of a complex square matrix. As a separate theorem the result was published for the first time by Geršgorin in 1931.

It was Olga Taussky-Todd who popularized this theorem. Not only are the history, application and properties of Geršgorin circles introduced in this paper but the biography of Taussky-Todd is briefly described as well.
