According to the Pope John Paul II, "the Christian family constitutes a specific revelation and realization of ecclesial communion, and for this reason too it can and should be called 'the domestic Church'" (Familiaris consortio /1981, art. 21). The term "ecclesia domestica" is therefore essential for current theology of marriage and family and for the related pastoral care.
The paper presents the results of contemporary research about his history. It consists of three steps: (1) the New Testament basis; (2) the development until the II Vatican Council; (3) the magisterium of Paul VI and John Paul II; conclusion.
