José de Anchieta and the Possibilities of a Mestizo Mind in Brazil

Abstract

The paper discusses the possibiity of thinking the theater of José de Anchieta as a phenomemon similar to "mesizo mind", discerned by Serge Gruzinski in Hispanic America. Even though the dispositions of Societas Jesu as a "society of discourse" determine jesuit letters and the system of Padroado inculcate the 16th century Brazilian jesuits a "war discourse" of the Portuguese crown, the Anchietan theater, written in Portuguese, Spanish and Tupi, may be considered as an interface of West and Indian thought.

As well as some Jesuitic catechims written in tupi, some dramatic texts, exemplified by the Auto of Sao Lourenço, seem to work out their strategies of mediation and adaptation.
