Beyond Welfare State Models: Transnational Historical Perspectives on Social Policy

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

In this review essay the author presents a collected work focused on the social policy and welfare state analysis from the transnational perspective. Using different typologies and models became standard part of the comparative welfare state research.

These concepts as well as traditional approaches to explanation of its development have usually one common feature which is so called methodological nationalism - an assumption that the nation state is the basic analytical unit. The authors of the reviewed work show on the example of the selected aspects of the Nordic model limits of this approach and potential of the transnational perspective which enables better understanding of social processes taking place across national borders.

The author of the article compares this version of the transnational approach with the other ones (f.e. the world-system theory) and indicates possibilities how to apply it in the social policy and welfare state research in the Czech environment.
