Abstract

Tonsillectomy is one of the most frequent surgeries performed by otorhinolaryngologists and bleeding is the most serious post-operative complication. In the paper, the authors give a review of the risk factors of post-tonsillectomy bleeding and the factors that influence the bleeding.

Rarely, the post-tonsillectomy bleeding can be life-threatening.There is a lack of exact data on their incidence because there is no systematic monitoring of these events. Despite of all the measures that can be taken it is not always possible to prevent the death of the patient or severe neurological consequences (due to cardiac arrest and resuscitation).

At the conclusion of the paper, there is a summary of basic measures necessary for treatment of both nonsevere and severe post-tonsillectomy bleeding.
