Abstract

The author deals with the first known report of the investigations of charter falsification in Bohemia from the 1280s. It relates to the Royal Notary of Italian origin, Henry the Italian.

He was accused of having issued the charter to the detriment of the King Wenceslas II. The charter was examined by a special consortium and it turned out that it was a forgery, which was palmed on the king to prejudice Henry the Italian.

The description of the examination of the charter and its seal preserved in the formulary of Henry the Italian, as well as its comparison with the provisions of Canon Law are the subject of this article.
