Abstract
The contribution explains possible approaches to second home research and getting data about second homes, followed with a chronological explanation of second home types in Czechia, terms of rise and consequences on the settlement structure, the environment and the leisure patterns. The roots of cabin movement in the early 20the century are described as well as the boom under socialism and contemporary transformation.
The cottage movement underwent two development waves and influenced significantly upon rural areas. The focus in the conclusion is giv en to new forms of recreational apartment homes and recreation areas - so called "Dutch villages".
