Abstract

The article deals with the interpretation of canopic jars in the Old Kingdom. It focuses on their role in the mummification proces, as well as, their position within the development of stone vessel production.

The author claims that there is almost no evidence for the usage of canopic jars as the containers of viscera in the Old Kingdom. Moreover, the author attempts to connect canopic jars with the sets of model stone vessels that represented an important part of the burial equipment of the Old Kingdom tombs.
