Biblical Pericopes for the Feast of Jan Hus

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2014

Abstract

The basis of the study is the analysis of 26 surviving sermons (some of them hitherto unknown), preached on Hus's feast on 6th July in various confessions in the period 1416-1619. The study focuses especially on the pericopes used as the basis for these sermons.

In them we can find a close relationship between the memory of Hus and the memory of biblical characters such as the prophets Samuel and Elijah, the Maccabean brethren, John the Baptist and the protomartyr Stephen. We can also find close links to church saints, including All Saints, St.

Vitus and St. Procopius.

In many pericopes there is a distinct eschatological perception of Hus's memory, and in practically all of them we can find somewhere a condemnation of the Roman Church.
