The paper focuses on one aspect of a larger research in cultural values and non-mathematical content of mathematics textbooks used in the Czech Republic. Analysis of images and contexts used in Czech textbooks (Moraová, 2013) as well as of images used in problems posed by Czech pre-service primary and in-service mathematics teachers (Moraová, 2014) show that they far too often present very conservative images of people and their roles.

The assumption here is that these stereotypical images may be meaningful to Czech majority pupils as they grow up with them but may be very distant to pupils and students from different cultural backgrounds. If this is the case, the cultural contents of learning texts (textbooks as well as posed problems used in lessons) need to be paid additional attention to in lesson planning.

In the here presented paper, the author focuses on selected images from Czech textbooks and word problems that might be culturally difficult for foreign pupils and may be an additional burden in their education.
