Abstract
The text charts the state of the contemporary film festival research and of understanding their roles within film culture. It relates international context to the Czech one on several levels: the state of the sub-discipline, methodology, areas of study, and possible research avenues for film festivals in the Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia.
