Many historical documents proove that the first contacts between Central Europe and Latin America were established soon after the New World was reached by Christopher Columbus. However, it took a long time untill the official relations with the former Czechoslovaquia could have been initiated, first in the diplomatic field, soon after that in the area of trade and later on in science and culture as well.

This article aims to describe mainly a cultural cooperation between Czechoslovaquia and Ecuador in the second half of the 20th century and, at the same time, to pint out a close link of such activities with economic and politic direction in both countries. As the principal source of information we have choosed the funds available from the National Archive and the Archive of the Ministery of Foreign Affaires.
