Abstract

In-situ acoustic emission (AE) method has been applied to study of deformation processes of an AJ51 magnesium alloy reinforced with short Saffil (R) fibres. The analysis of parameters of the AE signal revealed a significant difference in the deformation mechanisms between the matrix alloy and the composite.

It is shown that the AE technique is suitable for detection of the onset of fibre cracking.
