Comparison of body composition by children from different socioeconomic regions

Abstract

The main aim of this work is comparison selected parameters of body composition by children aged 10-11 years from different regions. Another aim is comparison selected parameters of body composition boys and girls separately.

Measurement probands belong to two different socio-economic regions (Prague, Most). The difference is in the percentage of unemployment, average wages, average number of crimes per 1 000 population, average number of physicians per 1 000 population.

These facts have impact on the lifestyle that has a significant effect on body composition. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis device BIA 2000-M.

The followed parameters are the percentage of body fat, the absolute amount of fat-free mass in kg, the proportion of total body water (% TBW). The Data was processed in NUTRI Plus, IBM SPSS 22 using the Mann-Whitney t test and software NCSS (Trial and Past Trial 2005).

The sample consisted of 48 probands. Comparison of results using non-parametric Mann-Whitney test showed that children in region Most have an average higher proportion of body fat than children from Prague.

The Prague's children have more average amount of FFM and % TBW than children from Most. Boys from Most have a greater proportion of fat than boys from Prague.

Boys from Prague have more FFM and % TBW. Girls from both regions reached similar values.
