Elias Lönnrot's and Josef Holeček's Kalevala in modern critical perspective

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The book focuses on a revision of Josef Holeček's translation (1894) of The Kalevala (1849), the sole rendering of the Finnish epic into Czech to date. Other parts of the book, accompanied by illustrations of Aksel Gallen-Kallela, the most renowned of The Kalevala's painters, include Jan Čermák's study of the epic's birth, structure and diction as well as of its literary, historical and cultural background.

The text of the epic is accompanied by the author's detailed commentary that brings our understanding of The Kalevala up to date with contemporary research into its philological, religious and anthropological aspects.
